Cafereena (Maharajgunj)

20110924-094602.jpgLocation: Maharajgunj, Saleways parking lot
Establishment: multi-cuisine cafe
Cost: 200 – 400 Nrs for a dish
Near by walking: Saleways, Kathmandu Grilled Chicken, Bawarchi (uptown)
Info:
20110924-094610.jpg
Situated in the back of Saleways parking lot, the Maharajgunj Cafereena location may be hard to spot. Better to be on the lookout for the bright green Saleways storefront and parking entrance just south and across the street from the U.S. Embassy.
Cafereena’s laminated, spiralbound menu is colorful and the selections span India, Thailand, the U.S. and Nepal, though the photos, sparse layout and small text size make one wish for a course in graphic design. The span may be large, but the range of selections isn’t. Perhaps the owners were forced to pick the best of what’s offered from the Durbar Marg location and throw together a menu.
The momos (pictured) come in a steel-reinforced bamboo steamer on a bed of banana leaves, picturesque. They need it, not being as good as those from Bhumi.
Buried in small text in the Indian section are the Kathi rolls, probably the best thing on the menu. Adventurous? Try the pad thai. I’m sure it’s different than anything you’ve experienced.
Of note, ample parking room. No view whatsoever.

Oohlala Cafe & Bar

Oohlala Cafe & Bar

Entrance of Ooh La La Cafe and Bar

Entrance of Ooh La La Cafe and Bar

Location: Thamel (entrance)
Establishment: Nepali and Western Continental Restaurant
Cost: 140 – 500 Nrs for a meal
Near by walking: Thamel, Garden of Dreams, Fire & Ice
Info:

www.oohlalacafeandbar.com
Tucked in to the third floor of the first major building on your right after passing the Garden of Dreams, Oohlala! is a teensy difficult to find, as it’s stair entrance is the same as the Himalayan Coffee Shop below. Continue up another flight and you’ve found it.
The Cafe & Bar’s menu (which appears to have a photo of an orange paper lamp as a background) warmly proclaims Entrées (mostly Nepali fare), Soups, Burgers (chicken and veggie), Ooh La La! Specials (one of which is Chicken Schnitzel?), Starters, Pizza (wood fired and by far the largest category), Pasta, and Salads.

At least they are sticking with only two genres of cuisine, and not attempting the usual half dozen like many other places.
If the weather allows, take a terrace seat in order to take in the melee of traffic entering and leaving Thamel. if you desire a quiet conversation, indoor tables are a better idea.
The pizza was good, nothing missing here, except perhaps inspiration. It’s too bad that this place is right across the street from Fire & Ice, as there is really no reason to depart from the former, except to save 100 Nrs on the basic Pizza Magherita.

The Attic

The Attic

Location: Uttar Dhoka
Establishment: Nepali Bar/Restaurant with Western Class
Cost: 300 – 1000 Nrs for drink, meal
Near by walking: Baskin Robbins, Irish Pub, Cibo, Ambassador Hotel, Bawarchi
Info:

Situated off the road a bit and HARD to find, the Attic is just that; an attic-bound restaurant and bar hang out with a beautiful interior. Ordering the standard fare gets you a bit of a shock, however, when the diminutive treats arrive on square, white ceramic plates amid the low-lit couches. This place has class that we expats have come to crave.
The Attic is also blessed with a large parking lot, making the trek worth driving. The only downside, hold your nose whilst going downstairs to the toilets.

Kebab Sampler Platter at Aqua Java Zing

Location: Thamel
Establishment: Restaurant and Bar
Cost: ?
Near by walking: everything in Thamel
Info:
Aqua Java Zing (map point may be slightly off) is a good place to drink and dance in Thamel, and (I’ve found) seems to have some of the best Thai food in Thamel. Amazing green curry!
