Veg Chowmein and Pakoras at Mountain View Resort

Veg Chowmein and Pakoras at Mountain View Resort

Location: Nagarkot, outside of Kathmandu
Establishment: Hotel, Restaurant
Cost: 100 – 500 Nrs for a meal, ? for a room
Near by walking: hotels in Nagarkot
Info:

Situated at the top of the pass in Nagarkot, The Mountain View Resort offers food to passers-by, as well as lodging. Though I didn’t have the chance to review the latter, the former was an amazing follow-up to a bike ride between KTM and Nagarkot. It’s hard to screw up chowmein, and this place certainly didn’t. The pakoras were also especially tasty. The prices were quite good for such a touristy place as well.

Chicken Butter Curry and Veggie Fritters at Hotel Tibet

Chicken Butter Curry and Veggie Fritters at Hotel Tibet

Location: Lazimpat
Establishment: Hotel and Restaurant
Cost: 200-700 nrs for a meal
Near by walking: Radisson Hotel, Lazimpat
Info:

Hidden on a back street across the way from the Radisson Hotel, Hotel Tibet doesn’t know whether to be claimed by Lazimpat or declare itself independent. Like many other places, once you’re through the little lobby area and go out back (try and seat yourself out there), you may easily forget you’re in downtown Kathmandu. There is an amazingly large relief mural behind the dining area. Comfortable, relaxed seating and iron and wood tables make for a very easy going meal. The curry is decent and the vegetarian momos are good. The veggie fritters are also very good.

Hotel Dwarikas

Hotel Dwarikas

Location: Battisputali
Establishment: Hotel and Restaurant
Cost: 3600 – 7200 nrs for set dinner
Near by walking: nothing of which I’m familiar with yet
Info: Battisputali P.O.Box-459,
Kathmandu, Nepal
(0)1 4473725
http://www.dwarikas.com/

Drift in to this breezy South Asian establishment and forget you are in modern Nepal. Dwarika’s is apparently a repurposed old Newari home, really a mansion estate. The finest hotel in Kathmandu, Dwarika’s also has an excellent set meal (6, 9, 12, 16 or 22 courses). You get issued a personalized menu that reads nearly like a program of the evening’s courses, which are easy to lose track of if not reminded.
The grounds are simply immense. Has a decent bar as well, and of course a pool. Good Scotch selection.

More details to come as I visit more often, which I will.
Five of Six stars for sheer hutzpah

Radisson Hotel

Radisson Hotel

Location: Lazimpat
Establishment: Hotel, Salon
Cost: ? (hotel), 300-500 nrs for a shave, haircut, massage
Near by walking: Bluebird Dept. Store, tourist and curio shops on back streets, lazimpat

I’ve not stayed at the Radisson, but their salon is great for a haircut. Buffet at 1100 nrs is a bit pricey for lunch. Great for parking if you are just touring Lazimpat.
