The Green Valley Getaway

The Green Valley Getaway

20120710-161538.jpg

Location: Inside Shivapuri forest, past military checkpoint, just before 30 min of heaven singletrack
Establishment: Nepali, Asian restaurant
Cost: 100 – 500 rps for a meal
Near by walking: Shivapuri National Forest
Info:

Only convenient to those already past the military gate and checkpoint, The Green Valley Getaway is a recent (mid 2012) addition to a small but growing village near the “30 minutes of heaven” singletrack through Shivapuri.

Constructed almost entirely of bamboo and hard wood, and therefore giving off the appearance that the Professor, Ginger, or Mr. and Mrs. Howell might pop in, the “Getaway” has an amazing view of the southern valley, and three levels from which to view it, including “Bagmir’s Attic” or a similar sounding name.

The menu might as well be photocopied from the hundreds of whole-in-the wall establishments around town, but the food is decent enough. The chownmein is delectable!20120710-161600.jpg

Brian’s Grill House

Brian’s Grill House

Location: near City Center, 9th floor of a white building with shiny blue glass
Establishment: Burger A La Midwest
Cost: 500-1000rps for a good meal
Near by walking: City Center Mall, Kumari Theatre
Info:

Having been to this establishment several times now, I can say that Brian puts as much attention and devotion into his restaurant experience, as he does his farmer’s market products. Located on the 9th floor of this relatively new (as of this writing) building in Kathmandu, Brian’s Grill House isn’t exactly pulling in wandering tourists, but then that doesn’t really seem to be his plan.
20120503-125820.jpg
Brian has put together the beginnings of a top-notch, western-styled restaurant, and has put as much thought into the contents of his menu as into the design of the menu itself.

20120503-125827.jpg
Brian’s primary offerings are his 20 burger creations (really, that means you’ll get 20 visits before HAVING to repeat) and that’s assuming he doesn’t change the menu for a while. Brian makes all his ingredients; the mustard, the ketchup, the buns, everything.

20120503-125908.jpg
This reviewer prefers the chipotle burger at present, and cajun fries, and enjoys getting to wash it all down with an ABC Stout.

20120503-125813.jpg
Of note, western style toilets, parking is manageable at best, no wifi. A view to beat all, being on the 9th floor. The bar is open to the outside, so you’ll get a picture window view of the Himalayas, assuming you’re sitting inside; the terrace is open for seating, giving you a birds eye view of the city. This is a great location to grab a meal before or after a movie at Kumari.

North field Forever Cafe

North field Forever Cafe

Location: Thamel, between the back side of Mandala Street and Seven Corners
Establishment: Your average Nepali, Asian Restaurant
Cost: 200 – 500 rps for a meal
Near by walking: Thamel
Info:

Nearly not worth mentioning, this run-of-the-mill establishment will not fail to feed you. The Satay was nice, but stay too long and you may forget in what restaurant you are in the first place.

Asian Village

Asian Village

Location: Lazimpat
Establishment: Nepali, Asian Restaurant
Cost: 200 – 600 rps for a meal
Near by walking: Tushita, Strawberry Restaurant, Mahaguthi, Radisson, Yak & Yeti Exports
Info:

The only thing worth going to this place for is the Starbuck’s coffee. Avoid the chinese food, everything seems to be flavored with the same lemon pepper…
