The Cheddar Melt Burger

Brian’s Grill House

Brian’s Grill House

Location: near City Center, 9th floor of a white building with shiny blue glass
Establishment: Burger A La Midwest
Cost: 500-1000rps for a good meal
Near by walking: City Center Mall, Kumari Theatre
Info:

Having been to this establishment several times now, I can say that Brian puts as much attention and devotion into his restaurant experience, as he does his farmer’s market products. Located on the 9th floor of this relatively new (as of this writing) building in Kathmandu, Brian’s Grill House isn’t exactly pulling in wandering tourists, but then that doesn’t really seem to be his plan.
20120503-125820.jpg
Brian has put together the beginnings of a top-notch, western-styled restaurant, and has put as much thought into the contents of his menu as into the design of the menu itself.

20120503-125827.jpg
Brian’s primary offerings are his 20 burger creations (really, that means you’ll get 20 visits before HAVING to repeat) and that’s assuming he doesn’t change the menu for a while. Brian makes all his ingredients; the mustard, the ketchup, the buns, everything.

20120503-125908.jpg
This reviewer prefers the chipotle burger at present, and cajun fries, and enjoys getting to wash it all down with an ABC Stout.

20120503-125813.jpg
Of note, western style toilets, parking is manageable at best, no wifi. A view to beat all, being on the 9th floor. The bar is open to the outside, so you’ll get a picture window view of the Himalayas, assuming you’re sitting inside; the terrace is open for seating, giving you a birds eye view of the city. This is a great location to grab a meal before or after a movie at Kumari.

Kathmandu Grilled Chicken Rotisserie

Kathmandu Grilled Chicken Rotisserie

"Grilled" Rotisserie Chickens warming at KTM Grilled Chicken Rotisserie

Grilled Rotisserie Chickens warming at KTM Grilled Chicken Rotisserie

Location: Maharajgunj, inside Saleways Dept Store Parking Lot
Establishment: Rotisserie Chicken (and fish) stop
Cost: 490 Nrs for a chicken (portions are less)
Near by walking: Saleways, Namaste Supermarket, Nina & Hagar, Upstairs Cafe
Info: 472-0810, 9841-597040, 9841-231177, 9841-260756 (who knows which numbers will actually work, good luck)

Located in the Saleways parking log (Saleways entrance is massive green signage) along with some other things, reviews to come soon, is KTM Grilled Chicken. Competing directly with Kathmandu Turbo Chicken (not yet reviewed), KTMGC is honestly a pretty decent thing for someone looking to pick up a chicken to feed a few folks in a pinch. The chickens, a bit scrawny, are being heated the same as any place at a supermarket in the ‘States. Avoid having the staff chop the chickens if you can; you’ll probably do a better job at home. The meat is ever so slightly spiced with a tandoori-type seasoning, so not the savory or bbq style to which many Americans are accustomed. This reviewer will go back in a hot second if there are no other dinner options and food needs to be had in 20 minutes at a given destination. Take out only!

You’ve arrived in Kathmandu and have the jet lag to beat all, ready to go by 6:00am even a few days in. Chikusa is your ticket. They open early, enough to give you some coffee before the lazy goings on of Thamel kick into gear around 10. Chikusa has a breakfast menu suitable for all day, but the Iced Coffee is where its at.

Iced Coffee (with coffee ice cubes!) at Chikusa Coffee

Chikusa uses real coffee ice cubes, something no where else in Kathmandu (that I’ve seen thus far) does, outside of my own kitchen. Check it out, and don’t miss the entrance. It’s easy to with all the hub-bub of Thamel. Hint: the street is slightly wider here and it’s on the right if you’re walking south. No parking to speak of and I don’t know if they have a restroom. It is almost certain that if they do, it’s not western-style.

Mountain View Resort

Mountain View Resort

Veg Chowmein and Pakoras at Mountain View Resort

Veg Chowmein and Pakoras at Mountain View Resort

Location: Nagarkot, outside of Kathmandu
Establishment: Hotel, Restaurant
Cost: 100 – 500 Nrs for a meal, ? for a room
Near by walking: hotels in Nagarkot
Info:

Situated at the top of the pass in Nagarkot, The Mountain View Resort offers food to passers-by, as well as lodging. Though I didn’t have the chance to review the latter, the former was an amazing follow-up to a bike ride between KTM and Nagarkot. It’s hard to screw up chowmein, and this place certainly didn’t. The pakoras were also especially tasty. The prices were quite good for such a touristy place as well.
